Love yourself for who you are

I learned an important truth last weekend — many times, people do things they normally wouldn't do just to fit in.

When I was asked last week, "Why are you wearing a mini skirt and high heels to the club?" I was ashamed when my answer wasn't, "Because that's what I want to wear." Instead my answer was, "So I can fit in with everyone else."

I've always tried to be the kind of person who doesn't care what other people think. But the truth is, I am as susceptible as anyone else.

We live in a world where anyone who is "different" is judged. No wonder depression is so prevalent — how can you be happy while, at the same time, always feeling like you have to pretend to be someone else? Chances are you’re probably trying to fit into a small box that you believe the world finds “acceptable.” And when people are depressed, they usually find themselves thinking these negative thoughts — “I don’t fit in; I’m different; I will always be alone.”

For women, it's even more difficult. If you choose to be a virgin, you're considered a "prude." If you choose to have multiple partners, you're considered a "slut" or a "whore." But why should you have to apologize for your decisions and who you choose to be? Who you are isn't something you should be judged for. Yet this can be a terrifying concept – being completely yourself in public. Whether it’s dressing the way you want to dress or something even harder — not apologizing for the decisions you make or your beliefs.

Who would you be if no one was watching? Chances are that person would be completely different from who you are now. But I say if people can’t love you for the person you are, then screw them. It’s their loss.
